RURAL HIGH-SPEED INTERNET SERVICE
It’s great to hear some officials are working toward better internet service for rural areas. But it sounds like only Pike County has an interest. Why aren’t we hearing from more rural area supervisors in Amite, Walthall or Lincoln counties?
MORE ABOUT HIGH-SPEED INTERNET SERVICE
In the recent article on the lack on high-speed broadband in the county, I was reminded of Magnolia Electric’s Darrell Smith’s comment in 2019. He stated that MEPA was not interested in utilizing their infrastructure to support high-speed internet. I imagine Mr. Smith would have a different opinion if he lived in a rural area and could not receive high-speed internet.
HIGH-SPEED INTERNET SERVICE, PART III
Prospective companies and employers may hesitate to invest in Pike County given that high-speed internet simply does not exist outside of the McComb city limits. In a recent column, Jack Ryan discussed the demise of print media and growth of digital media. Good luck with that when a large portion of current subscribers don’t have access to high speed internet.
HIGH-SPEED INTERNET SERVICE, PART IV
Furthering the comments on Magnolia Electric’s stance not to utilize “their” infrastructure on high-speed internet for everyone, as far as I remember, “we” members own the infrastructure, as we are a co-operative. Please reconsider this decision — and quit advertising Online Bill Pay until we are all able to use that feature.
CHIP TRUCK TURNS OVER
Why did the chip truck turn over in McComb? Because he was going too fast around the curve. Why was he going too fast? Because he gets paid by the load. If he gets paid by how many trips he can make each day, he will drive faster and less safely. Chip trucks are almost as dangerous as log trucks.
THE PROSTITUTION STING
I find it concerning that our county has unsolved murder cases and instead of using time to work on those, our law enforcement investigators are setting up prostitution stings to catch “incels” trying to buy a date. Seriously, what is the purpose of wasting time and resources to set up johns instead of working on murder cases? Somebody’s priorities are seriously mixed up.
MORE CRIME REPORTING
McComb citizens are upset about crime and we need to know what is going on in our community. Maybe people will be more vigilant if they are aware of a particular area crimes are occurring, and not weeks after. There should have been more information on area crime in the paper. Reporting the news does not make this area unattractive for businesses. The criminal elements in the area handle that.
MORE ABOUT LITTER
Is anybody even enforcing litter laws? We live near Magnolia and it’s just as bad or worse here than in McComb. If no one is being ticketed, any cleanup effort is moot.
ENFORCE THE LITTER LAWS
Seems there is more talk about road trash in Pike County lately, and justifiably so. It’s as bad as ever. A considerable penalty has been established but does no good if there is no enforcement. I would like to see signs, bearing the penalty, placed across the county, as well as periodic publishing of the number of littering citations issued, by supervisor district.
VENDORS OUTSIDE THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT
I like the vendors setting up at the Pike County Health Department parking lot, and many others do too. They hurt nothing and are only trying to make a living. Let me say that again — they hurt nothing. The supervisors need to reconsider this matter using their own minds instead of letting the road manager take part in the deliberations. He’s not a supervisor.
COLLEGE COACHES AND THEIR MILLIONS
Your editorial on coaches’ salaries and also Mac Gordon’s column about it were really good. No coach is worth $9 million. If Lane Kiffin is this good of a coach, then he should have no losses for the season. Maybe it should be in their contract that you would be fined for each loss. It sure would have been nice if my husband would have gotten paid that much!
ABOUT DEION SANDERS
Who can blame him for leaving? The HBCUs that he promised to uplift and promote change. Allegedly the job wasn’t about money but a higher calling to “his people” as stated in his announcement as JSU head coach. The governor and mayor made promoting Jackson an impossible task. Poor to no drinking water and crime. The football program would have been manageable if everything else didn’t fall off the rails.
McCOMB’S DEPLORABLE FINANCIAL RECORDS
Hey Mayor Lockley, weren’t you the mayor of McComb when the deplorable record-keeping started?
EXPANDING MEDICAID
When it comes to expanding Medicaid in Mississippi, could it be that Reeves and Bryant can’t figure out a way to line their pockets? Or is it financial malfeasance?
