OKLAHOMA CITY- (KOKH) —
A local security service in Mustang is partnering with Canadian Valley Technology Center to give students real-world experience through $15 an hour paid apprenticeships.
“Yes, they do get paid for their time while they’re working here. They’re producing actual output for Security Solutions. The parts that they’re making today actually go to customers all around the country,” said Steve Whetstone, Vice President for Security Solutions.

Whetstone said everyone involved in this new apprenticeship program benefits from it, from Security Solutions, to local manufacturers, to the students participating; taking what they learn from the classroom and applying it at the job site.
“It’s one thing to produce a project for me, and when I’m done with my piece of it, that’s it. But it’s more important for them to understand that in a real-world work station, how it impacts the entire product flow, from when they order materials, to when it ships out the door,” he said.
Whetstone said there are four students participating, with one of them being a high school student. He said they are on month number two of a two-year long accreditation program, and adds that the program also aims to help close a knowledge gap.
“When someone graduates from college, or a tech center, or even just high school, there’s a 30% gap between what they know and how to be productive in that specific role. So we want to teach not only the hands on precision machining piece, but we also want to look at employability skills,” he said.
Whetstone said they’re heavily recruiting for next year’s program, working to find high school sophomores and juniors.
