Musk, the biggest (money) loser ever

This is not deja vu. Repeat, this is not deja vu. Elon Musk has beaten the record set by SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son in 2000 of losing the largest amount of money in the history of money. By losing around $180 billion since November 2021, the man who should have stuck to electric vehicles and space stuff instead of getting picky about picking up Twitter has now entered the record books.

Son, by comparison, had lost a ‘piddly’ $58.6 billion two decades back. To lose net worth from $320 billion in 2021 to $134 billion in 2023 may have had prospective Indian in-laws make loud tut-tut noises and rethink potential shaadi plans.

But let’s not forget that he remains the second-richest person on the planet – after the far- quieter fashion magnate, LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault, whom you have to Google search to find out what he looks like.

Interestingly, the otherwise loquacious Musk has been rather silent on the tumbling fortune front. It would be admissible for him, at least in private, to tap the table about his cumulative loss, even if he’s not the actively grieving kind.

The old saying about throwing money at a problem may or may not hold true here. For, we do not know the quantum laws of business by which Musk’s mind works. But let’s just be relieved at one thing – at least no one has to bail him out of a bad money situation. Yet.
