TV and broadband customers saved £162 just by simply switching providers, a report found.

Sky customers would save an average of £261 per year by making the move while those with Virgin Media could be £210 better off.

Natalie Hitchins, from Which?, told The Telegraph: “While our findings show that out of contract customers can avoid mid-contract price rises by switching to a new provider or haggling with their current one, those still signed up to mobile or broadband contracts could be hit with price increases that could be as high as 18 per cent.”

Under current rules broadband providers can only use the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) to measure inflation to increase their prices.

However, some mobile providers use the Retail Prices Index (RPI) – which is typically higher.

RPI is expected to reach 14 per cent this month meaning thousands of mobile customers could see their bills hike by a fifth.

Which? is now asking providers to let customers leave contracts penalty-free if they do see an increase in costs.

A spokesman for Vodafone said: “We encourage everyone to review their plan at the end of any contract so they can make sure they’re on the right deal for their needs – which often change over time.

“At the end of every contract period we notify our customers of the best value deals available, and can also support them in finding this online, over the phone and in stores.”

A spokesman for Three said: “Three has some of the lowest prices and unmatched propositions on the market.”

How can I save money on my broadband and mobile contracts?

Switching contracts when yours is up is the single best way to save money on your telecom bills.

In the weeks before your contract is up, use comparison sites to familiarise yourself with what deals are available.

It’s a known fact that new customers always get the best deals.

Sites like MoneySuperMarket and Uswitch all help you customise your search based on price, speed and provider.

This should make it easier to decide whether to renew your contract or move to another provider.

However, if you do not want to switch and are happy with the service you’re getting under your current provider – haggle for a better deal.

You can still make significant savings by renewing your contract rather than rolling on to the tariff you’re given after your deal.

You could save up to £210 a year on your bills by haggling alone.
