Maruti Suzuki Fronx vs Tata Punch: Brief comparison between compact SUVs


Maruti Suzuki has revealed the pricing of its latest compact SUV, the Fronx, which starts at an ex-showroom price of Rs 7.46 lakh. The Fronx was unveiled globally at Auto Expo 2023 and features Nexa’s distinctive design style, known as “Crafted Futurism.” The car can also be obtained through the Maruti Suzuki Subscribe program, with a monthly subscription fee starting at Rs 17,378.

The Fronx is in direct competition with the Tata Punch, and a brief comparison between the two cars follows.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx versus Tata Punch: Transmission

  • Maruti Suzuki Fronx offers two engine choices: a 1.2 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1 litre turbo petrol engine. Meanwhile, the Tata Punch only offers a 1.2 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.
  • Maruti Fronx also provides three transmission options, including a 5-speed manual, a 5-speed AMT automatic, and a 6-speed torque converter automatic, while the Tata Punch only has a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT automatic.
  • The 1-litre turbo engine of Maruti Fronx has mild hybrid technology, which includes Electric Torque Assist during Acceleration and Regenerative Braking, for better fuel efficiency. In contrast, Tata Motors offers the Traction Pro mode in the AMT versions of the Punch, which is useful in low-traction situations during off-road and challenging road conditions.

Tata Punch

  • The entry-level Pure version of the Tata Punch is equipped with essential features such as dual airbags, ABS, ISOFIX child seat anchors, central locking, front power windows, and engine start/stop technology.
  • By opting for the Adventure variant, buyers can get additional features like an audio system with four speakers and steering-mounted controls, electrically adjustable wing mirrors, rear power windows, follow-me-home headlamps, a USB charging socket, and full wheel covers.
  • The top-level Accomplished variant offers more advanced technology, such as a 7.0-inch touchscreen, connectivity with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a rear-view camera, fog lamps, keyless go, cruise control, and stylish 15-inch steel wheels.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx

  • The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is constructed on the Suzuki HEARTECT platform and is equipped with several safety features. These features include six airbags that cover the driver, co-driver, side, and curtain, as well as three-point ELR seatbelts, ESP with Hill Hold Assist & rollover mitigation, ABS with EBD, and ISOFIX child seat anchorages.
  • The Maruti Suzuki Fronx boasts a modern and high-tech interior, with a 9.0-inch HD Smart Play Pro+ infotainment system that offers wireless connectivity to both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The sound system is provided by ARKAMYS, while Suzuki Connect provides access to over 40 connected car features. Other notable features of the interior include a flat-bottom steering wheel, a HUD unit, 360-degree camera, and cruise control.
  • In terms of design, the Fronx takes inspiration from the Grand Vitara and Baleno, sporting a large hexagonal grille, LED headlamps and DRLs, faux skid plates on the front bumper, and 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. Its sloping roofline gives it a sporty, coupe-like appearance.
