Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk are of course two of the world’s best-known technology billionaires – with Zuckerberg the boss of Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta, and Musk bringing us Tesla and SpaceX before he took over the reins of Twitter in 2022.
Now it looks as though the two might just be going one on one, after they agreed to face each other in a ‘cage fight’.
The pair’s social media sparring over the proposed match has gone viral, leaving folks wondering if the fight may actually happen.
What do we know about it so far?
Who started the challenge?
Musk appears to have been responsible for laying down the challenge to Zuckerberg, when he posted a tweet aimed at the Meta boss which read ‘I’m up for a cage match if he is lol’.
Zuckerberg responded in kind on Instagram Stories with a screenshot of the tweet under which he had written ‘Send Me Location’ – a reference to a famous MMA meme when Khabib Nurmagomedov challenged Conor McGregor.
Musk appeared to confirm the fight in his response, saying: ‘If this is for real, I will do it.’
He also tweeted back ‘Vegas Octagon’ – which is the competition mat and area in Las Vegas used for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events.
Could it actually happen?
While nobody has confirmed that this is actually happening, it has certainly captured the imagination of tweeters who are desperate for such a bout to take place.
Some have shared memes showing mocked up posters for the fight, as well as debating who might win such a bout.
Jake Paul has even jumped in on the action, suggesting the fight could take place in the PFL – the Professional Fighters League – which he signed with earlier this year.
‘Elon, I will gladly promote your fight against Zuck, we can do it in the PFL on ESPN+ for charity,’ he said on Twitter.
Who might win the fight?
It’s hard to say who might emerge victorious – although Musk has been sharing jokey tweets about his own abilities in the ring.
‘I have this great move that I call The Walrus, where I just lie on top of my opponent and do nothing,’ the 51-year-old claimed on Twitter.
He also added: ‘I almost never work out, except for picking up my kids & throwing them in the air.’
Despite his alleged lack of exercise, Musk would have the advantage over Zuckerberg when it comes to physical size – he is reported to be six foot one, towering over his five foot seven inch rival – and has previously spoken about getting into street fights when he was growing up in South Africa.
Zuckerberg, however, is younger than Musk – he recently turned 39 – and also trains in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) – having already won tournaments in jiu-jitsu.
