According to CarGurus, the national average price of a second-hand car in Britain, dated from 2018 to 2022, is £23,516.

However, they also found that Hull is the most affordable major city to buy a motor that’s between a year and five years old – with average vehicle listing prices at a decent £18,480.

That’s a striking £5,036, or 27.3% less, than the national average.

Second-hand cars for sale in Liverpool were the second-best value, offering £3,262 in savings on average, while Glasgow is third at £2,390.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, London is the most expensive major city in Britain to buy a used car – with prices actually exceeding the national average by £9,694.

Southampton is the second-most expensive major city for used car buyers, where motors can be found for £1,645 above the UK average, while third is Birmingham, at £1,557.

Chris Knapman, Editorial Director at CarGurus, said: “While there are many factors that determine the price of a used vehicle, a car’s location is often overlooked, yet it can have a significant impact.

“Our data shows the average cost of a used car can vary by thousands of pounds depending on where they are located. To help buyers find the best deals, we have compiled an analysis showing how average car pricing varies by region.
