Man who intruded Windsor Castle to 'kill' Queen Elizabeth jailed for nine years. Here is everything you need to know



The man, who intruded into the Windsor Castle to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II in 2021, has been sentenced to nine years in prison. But he will remain in hospital till he is considered fit enough to go to prison. Jaswant Singh Chail was arrested on Christmas Day 2021 armed with a loaded crossbow inside Windsor Castle after he scaled the perimeter of the castle with a nylon rope ladder. He was wearing a metal Star Wars-inspired mask at the time of his arrest.

Plan revealed in sinister video

The British citizen of Indian origin described himself as a ‘Sith’ and ‘Darth Chailus’ in a sinister video. He revealed his plan to murder the monarch to an artificial intelligence-generated “girlfriend”, who had responded to him.

Arrested with crossbow

He wandered on the ground for two hours before he was stopped near the private residence of the monarch and told the police officer that ‘he was there to kill the Queen’. Earlier, he had applied for positions within the Ministry of Defence Police, the British Army, the Royal Marines, the Royal Navy, and the Grenadier Guards so that he could get close to the Royal Family.

Motive

According to Sky News, the prosecutors said that the man with Sikh heritage hatched the conspiracy to kill the Queen to avenge the Jallianwallah Bag massacre of 1919 in India under British rule.

Chail pleads guilty

Chail pleaded guilty to attempting to “injure or alarm” the Queen under the Treason Act. He was also convicted for possessing an offensive weapon and making threats to kill the Queen on Christmas Day 2021.

Sentenced

After hearing evidence from three psychiatrists, Judge Justice Hilliard sentenced Chail to nine years with a further five years on extended license. He will be transferred from Broadmoor Psychiatric Hospital to serve his sentence in prison when he is fit enough to do so.
