Man shot by Ashtabula County deputies after shooting at SWAT cars during standoff: Sheriff – Cleveland 19 News

ASHTABULA, Ohio (WOIO) – An investigation is underway after an exchange of gunfire between Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Deputies and a man who investigators say fired shots at SWAT vehicles Friday night.

Ashtabula County Sheriff William Niemi says deputies arrived at a home on Tryon Road in Saybrook Township after receiving calls saying the man was pointing a gun at neighbors and their children.

The man then pointed a gun at the deputies on-scene before retreating back into the home.

Niemi says several attempts for negotiations failed and the suspect did not follow verbal deputy commands.

The man then started shooting out of the window at the deputies and striking SWAT vehicles, which is when Niemi says deputies returned fire and “neutralized the threat”.

The suspect’s identity and condition is not currently known.

The Ashtabula, Geauga and Lake Counties SWAT teams also came to the scene to assist during the hours-long standoff.

Niemi says the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) is investigating the shooting.

This is a developing story. Return to 19 News for updates.
