MahaRERA makes certification for real estate agents mandatory from January 1

MUMBAI: In a bid to enhance transparency and professionalism in the real estate sector, the Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) has made it mandatory for real estate agents to possess a valid certificate from the authority to operate with effect from January 1.

This mandate applies to new agents seeking registration as well as existing agents renewing their registration. The regulatory body has warned that non-compliance with new regulation, including conducting real estate transactions without a MahaRERA certificate, will result in stringent actions.

Real estate agents often operate in the field without formal education or training, facing various challenges and MahaRERA has been taking steps to address these concerns. In January 2023, the regulatory authority mandated training and a certification for both new agent registrations and renewals.

Around 8,000 agents have qualified and received MahaRERA certificates through three examinations conducted until now, the authority said. To ease the transition, this requirement has seen multiple extensions so far.

Despite these extensions, it was observed that several agents are yet to undergo the mandated training or obtain their certificates. In response, MahaRERA has made it clear now that, starting from January 1, new agents will not be allowed to register or renew without a MahaRERA certificate. This decision has been communicated through official orders.

Importantly, the new regulations also extend to employees associated with developers and those involved in related tasks. They are required to upload their certificates on the designated portal before January 1. Realty developers are also expected to mention the names of trained agents on its portal to ensure smooth transactions.MahaRERA has emphasized that these measures are being actively implemented to foster a more transparent and compliant real estate sector. Failure to adhere to these regulations will lead to severe consequences for both agents and employees associated with developers.
