Lumen Technologies says ransomware attack disrupted call centers – Cybersecurity Dive

Dive Brief:

  • Lumen Technologies said a ransomware attack discovered last week impacted voice services at its call centers for a small number of enterprise customers.
  • The company said it has restored basic service and is continuing to work on full restoration of those operations.
  • “At this time, we have no evidence that points to direct customer application access,” Mark Molzen, global issues director at Lumen, said Tuesday via email. “We thank our customers for their patience.”

Dive Insight:

Lumen disclosed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it was the target of two cyberattacks.

The Monroe, Louisiana-based firm said a malicious actor placed ransomware on a limited number of servers that support a segmented hosting service. That attack was discovered last week.

A separate incident involved a sophisticated actor installing malware on the company’s IT systems and exfiltrating data.

Molzen said the company does not believe either of the events are material.

“One of the many changes we’ve made at Lumen is a greater emphasis on trust and transparency,” Molzen said, adding that is why the company made the regulatory disclosure.

The company believes it has “taken the necessary steps to insulate our customers and ourselves from the effect of this incident,” Molzen said.
