Lions Win Four Straight for First Time Since 2015 – Loyola Marymount University Athletics

LA JOLLA, Calif.Madison Werner blasted a left-footed shot off the underside of the crossbar to send the Lions home with a 1-0 victory over UCSD on Sunday afternoon in La Jolla, Calif.

Jennessa Groves continued her run of strong play with a team-high seven shots including a pair on goal. Many of her shots were extremely dangerous opportunities.

Kylie Dobbs came on and was once again a dangerous weapon off head coach Chris Chamides’s bench. Dobbs subbed on at the end of the 24th minute and tested the goalkeeper in the 26th minute with a left-footed effort.

Werner’s breakthrough came in the 31st minute. Kailey Park slid a pass around the defense and found Werner at the back post. Werner lined up a shot with only the goalkeeper to beat and blasted a left-footed shot off the underside of the bar. It was unclear if the ball crossed the goal line in real time, but the referee signaled a goal straightaway.

The Lions switched into defense mode in the second half, notching their fourth clean sheet of the season. True freshman goalkeeper JJ Hoover continued to be staunch in goal, recording four more saves and improving her record to 5-2.

Amber McCorkle recorded a shot on target in the first few minutes of the second half. Dobbs followed up with another left-footed effort.
