Letter: Fire Victim Trust responds to advertisements – Chico Enterprise-Record

I am the Trustee of the Fire Victim Trust (FVT), created out of the PG&E Bankruptcy to help pay victims of the 2015-2018 Northern California fires. I’ve been involved with the FVT since it was created and have led it since July 1, 2022. In that time, I have done everything in my power to fairly compensate fire survivors, as has a team of dedicated claims processors and the law firms working hard for the tens of thousands of fire victims they represent.

We all are concerned by ads appearing in the Chico Enterprise-Record placed by a group called “California Disaster Advocates”, who advertise themselves as public insurance adjusters. The ads begin with “Urgent News for … Survivors” and go on to urge victims to “Get in line to reopen all Home Owners wildfire claims” by May 31. The ads also state that the “Average recovery for claimants is between 50K and 200K.”

Let me state as clearly as possible that the FVT is not reopening claims and does not have a deadline of May 31st. We also are not aware of an “average claim.”  And importantly: this group is not affiliated with the FVT.

The FVT has worked very hard to make this difficult process fair and transparent.  If you have questions about the ads you have seen, I encourage you to discuss them with your lawyer or local representatives.  Again, these ads are not related to the FVT or FVT claims and relate to insurance only.
