Leave God out of it

Mullah Nasruddin had gone to a tailor’s shop to get himself a new shirt. The tailor took his measurements and said, ‘Please come back after a week, if God wills, the shirt will be ready.’ Nasruddin went to the tailor on the appointed day. The tailor said there has been a delay, ‘If God wills, the shirt will be ready tomorrow.’ Nasruddin returned the following day. ‘I am sorry,’ the tailor said, ‘please try tomorrow, and if God wills, it will be ready.’ An exasperated Nasruddin asked, ‘How long will it take if you leave God out of it?’

Many of us have this tendency to attribute our inefficiencies to God. The Divine is omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, but by blaming Him for our lethargy and justifying the delay to God not willing it to happen, results in a laid-back attitude to life. God, after all, helps those who help themselves. And how does one help oneself? By working hard, showing initiative and energy, being prepared to meet exigencies. Then and only then should we be seeking God’s assistance. For, as Sophocles says, ‘Heaven never helps the men who will not act.’

The last word again to the inimitable Mullah. He was once climbing a tree with his slippers tucked under his belt. A passerby shouted, ‘Why are you doing this; surely, you will not need your slippers on the tree.’ Nasruddin replied, ‘You must be prepared for every emergency. For all I know, I might find a road up there.’

Indeed, work hard and be prepared. God will surely help us, and success will be ours.
