Kansas’ Chandler Gibbens (men’s) and Texas Tech’s Juliet Cherubet (women’s) secured the first Big 12 cross country weekly accolades this season for their respective schools.
Gibbens topped his previous personal record by over 31 seconds to claim the men’s individual title at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational in a time of 23:08.4 and a pace of 4:38 per mile. The senior, who is working toward his master’s degree in accounting, finished atop the field of 155 competitors and earned the NCAA Division I Men’s Athlete of the Week from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. He is the first men’s runner to secure two career weekly Conference awards for Kansas since Colby Wissell (2006, 2007). Gibbens earned his last weekly honor as an undergraduate on September 20, 2022 when he was double majoring in accounting and political science.
Cherubet led a 1-2 finish for Texas Tech at the Gans Creek Classic with a winning time of 20:16.40 in the 6K. The freshman earned the top finish by nearly 25 seconds. The performance helped the Red Raiders to a fifth-place team finish out of 23 programs with 178 points. The pre-nursing major becomes the first TTU women’s cross country runner to garner a weekly Conference award since Jocelyn Caro earned the distinction on October 18, 2016.
