Duluth, MN (KROC-AM News)- The BCA is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred in Duluth Friday afternoon.
During a news conference Friday night, Duluth Police Chief Mike Ceynowa told reporters he was informed of the shooting shortly before 2:30 p.m. The shooting occurred in a residential area in the city’s east side.
Ceynowa said officers were in the area to arrest a 34-year-old Duluth man on suspicion of felony threats. The man was armed with a knife when officers arrived.

Police attempted to de-escalate the situation and at one point deployed a taser and sponge rounds to get the man into custody. The subject then charged at one of the officers with the knife, Ceynowa said.

One of the officers on scene then fired a round from his handgun, striking the subject. Police began to administer aid and called an ambulance. The subject was brought to a Duluth hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Ceynowa said the officers involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave. He also extended the police department’s condolences to the family of the man fatally shot by officers. The BCA is set to release more information regarding the deadly shooting at a later time.
