Job Opportunity at the ABQ BioPark: Assistant Aquarium Tech – City of Albuquerque


Successful candidates must have a passion for marine life and the high quality of care each animal deserves.

This position is employed through Tryfacta staffing agency, not the City of Albuquerque, and is located at the ABQ BioPark Aquarium. This full time position is limited to a two year term.

Assistant Aquarium Tech duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Receive general instruction from assigned area leads and Supervisory staff
  • Assist in maintaining and caring for a variety of marine and aquatic species within the ABQ BioPark
  • Assist Supervisory staff and higher-level Aquarists
  • Observe animals in assigned areas of responsibility, any signs of illness or injury are reported to Supervisor
  • Prepare raw food diets for animals
  • Maintain diet prep work area. Clean tools and equipment. Label food containers.
  • Assist in feeding a variety of marine and aquatic animals. Note and report any animals not eating
  • Assist in maintaining water quality in exhibits via multiple methods such a water changes
  • Monitor and report issues in exhibit life support systems and its components.
  • Clean exhibits by scrubbing algae and siphoning substrates
  • Clean and maintain work areas behind the scenes
  • Assist in the upkeep of daily records including: behavior, diet, system maintenance, medical treatments, mortality or other observations
  • Coverage as needed
  • Clean and maintain exhibits by SCUBA
  • Respond to public inquiries in a professional manner; forward complaints to supervisor for resolution
  • Provide enrichment to animals as directed
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required

 

Successful Assistant Aquarium Techs:

  • May have experience with aquaculture or aquarium background

Preferred qualifications

Assistant Aquarium Techs must be 18 years or older, have a High school diploma or GED, and have basic computer proficiency. Physically able to lift or move up to 50 pounds. Comfortable working in and around water, in a combination of indoor and outdoor environments, on slippery or uneven surfaces, and may involve exposure to chemicals, noise, dust, heat, cold and/or inclement weather conditions.  Physical requirements include the ability to sit, stand, bend, kneel, push, pull, read, write and speak English. (Candidates must pass a security background check to be hired.)

 Work schedule:

Full-time positions available. All positions require weekend and holiday work. Shifts are 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a 1 hour lunch and two 20 min breaks.


Pay rate:

$16.03 per hour.  Assistant Aquarium Techs are employed through Tryfacta staffing agency, not the City of Albuquerque.
