Food poisoning: 137 students hospitalised in Karnataka

A total of 137 nursing and paramedical students staying at a private hostel here have fallen sick due to food poisoning after having dinner, police sources said on Tuesday. The students have been admitted to various hospitals in the city, city police commissioner N Shashi Kumar said. The students complained of stomach ache, vomiting and diarrhoea and were admitted to hospitals on Monday night. Water contamination is said to be the reason for the food poisoning, sources said.

Boeing Co expects to slash about 2,000 white-collar jobs this year in finance and human resources through a combination of attrition and layoffs, the plane-maker confirmed to Seattle Times newspaper on Monday. Last month, the Virginia-based company announced it would hire 10,000 workers in 2023, but some support positions would be cut. Back then Boeing acknowledged it will “lower staffing within some support functions” – a move meant to enable it to better align resources to support current products and technology development.

The United States on Monday ruled out returning to China the debris of the surveillance balloon which was shot down in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of South Carolina on Saturday. The US military intensified its efforts to collect the remnants of the high-altitude surveillance balloon from China that floated over the United States over several days last week from Montana to South Carolina. Railways earns Rs 1.30 lakh crore from freight loading in this financial year till January 2023

Indian Railways’ earnings from freight loading in the first 10 months of the financial year 2022-23 crossed last year’s earnings for the same period, the Ministry of Railways said. The Ministry of Railways said the freight earnings increased by 16 per cent when compared to the same period last year. “Between April and January 2023, freight loading was 1,243.46 MT, an increase of 7 per cent over last year’s 1,159.08 MT. The railway sector earned Rs 135,387 crore as compared to Rs 117,212 crore last year, a 16 per cent improvement over the previous year,” it said.

Google hopes ”Bard” will outsmart ChatGPT, Microsoft in AI

Google is girding for a battle of wits in the field of artificial intelligence with “Bard,” a conversational service apparently aimed at countering the popularity of the ChatGPT tool backed by Microsoft. Bard initially will be available exclusively to a group of “trusted testers” before being widely released later this year, according to a Monday blog post from Google CEO Sundar Pichai. Google’s chatbot is supposed to be able to explain complex subjects such as outer space discoveries in terms simple enough for a child to understand. It also claims the service will also perform other more mundane tasks, such as providing tips for planning a party, or lunch ideas based on what food is left in a refrigerator.
