School’s out, but on Saturday, July 22, kids in Riverside came to Norte Vista High School to hone their basketball skills.
For a second year, Jaylen “Jrock” Clark, a former UCLA Bruins basketball player, hosted the camp for youths between 12 and 17.
The Riverside native played basketball at Etiwanda and Centennial high schools before joining UCLA’s team. In June, he signed a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, as the 53rd overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, according to an NBA news release.
He established the free JROCK Community Camp to help players who may not otherwise be able to attend a basketball camp, a news release states.
“We hope to teach the underserved youth in Riverside that there are always opportunities for them — success is not achieved by luck or accident, but rather achieved through hard work, discipline, preparation and perseverance,” Clark said in the release.
The camp was funded by donations and a partnership between JROCK Community Camp, the Riverside Sports Commission, Ethika, the Riverside Parks and Recreation Department and sponsors.
