Jasper acquires Stability AI’s Clipdrop to strengthen marketing copilot

San Francisco-based Jasper, the startup known for its generative AI-driven marketing copilot, today announced it has acquired Stability AI’s image creation and editing platform Clipdrop

While the terms of the transaction have not been disclosed, Jasper claims the deal will strengthen the multimodal capabilities of its creative companion, enabling teams to accelerate their ad strategies and develop on-brand creatives.

“The addition of Clipdrop to Jasper will advance our vision to be the most comprehensive end-to-end marketing copilot in the industry, powering all the formats, channels, and functions enterprise marketing teams need. A copilot this robust will enable the enterprises we serve to go beyond simple AI prompts to achieve more personalized marketing, better-informed automation, and improved optimization across their entire strategy,” Timothy Young, CEO of Jasper, said in a press release.

The development marks the latest enhancement for the end-to-end platform, which is already used by several known enterprises including Hubspot, Morningstar, Amplitude and Wayfair.

Jasper to improve creative work with Clipdrop

With its AI copilot, Jasper already supported art generation, where users could simply describe their creative idea in a prompt to get a visual representation of it. However, just generating an image is never going to be enough when you’re working on complex visual campaigns.

This is where the acquisition of Paris-based Clipdrop comes in.

Founded in 2020 by Google alumni Cyril Diagne, Damien Henry and Jonathan Blanchet, Clipdrop gives individual and business users a platform to create new images or edit existing ones with changes like inpainting, background removal/replacement, object removal, image upscaling, relighting, face swapping and more. Users can uncrop images and even create fresh ones from doodles and accompanying prompts to develop an expansive number of variations in size, detail and style and meet their project needs.

At the core, this entire experience is driven by models from Stability AI, including Stable Diffusion XL and SDXL Turbo. Users get two options to get started: a web/mobile platform with free and paid tiers (with enhanced capabilities) or an API for product implementation with usage-based pricing.

With this deal, which closed on February 20, Jasper aims to integrate the entire set of capabilities Clipdrop has on offer into its copilot, making it even better for marketing teams worldwide. However, this change will happen over the coming months. For now, teams working with Jasper will be able to tap Clipdrop’s capabilities through Jasper’s API.

The entire team behind Clipdrop will join Jasper with immediate effect and continue to research multimodality inside the company’s copilot with its proprietary tech. The team will remain based in Paris, with Henry taking up a larger leadership role in research and innovation for the entire Jasper product.

“There are natural synergies between the two companies and a clear focus on creating the best multimodal platform for marketers. We can’t wait to get started,” Henry said in the release.

Notably, Clipdrop will also continue to offer its subscription as a standalone product via its own website.

Stability plans to support Clipdrop’s tech with its own models

While it remains to be seen how Clipdrop and Jasper evolve following the acquisition, Stability AI, which recently debuted Stable Diffusion 3.0 to reinvent text-to-image generative AI, says it will continue to support Clipdrop with its models. The company acquired the tool back in March 2023 for an undisclosed sum.

“We’re thrilled to see Clipdrop expand their offering by joining forces with Jasper. We will continue to partner with Clipdrop on research and deliver our cutting-edge models to their platform,” Emad Mostaque, CEO of Stability AI, said.

According to Future Market Insights, the global market for AI-powered tools like Clipdrop that help designers create digital content is expected to grow from $4.3 billion in 2023 to $24.7 billion by 2033 with a CAGR of 17.3% during the forecast period. Other players offering similar experiences with AI are PicsArt, Adobe and Canva.
