A DRIVER who claims to have done a million miles in his Tesla has shared an easy trick he uses to make the EV’s battery last longer.
Hansjörg von Gemmingen-Hornberg has owned motors from the Elon Musk-helmed brand for nearly two decades, starting with their first-ever model, the Roadster.
The electric car enthusiast, from Germany, currently owns a 2014 Model S, which he bought second-hand several years ago.
According to the odometer, the car has covered around 1.18 million miles.
Hansjörg admitted he has had to change the battery three times over the nearly ten years he’s owned the car but the first two changes came under his warranty.
That’s lucky since a battery replacement can cost between £4,000 and £15,000.
Now, though, he says it still runs perfectly after the maintenance work.
His mileage has been boosted by being part of an EV owners club who take long-distance road trips, including drives to northern Africa and China.
Asked how he ensures the car’s longevity, Hansjörg told Watt Energy: “I don’t drive so fast, of course.
“And I don’t charge up to 100% or go below 10%, I’m mostly at around 20%.
“That’s better for the battery and gives it a long life.”
He recommended keeping the charge between about 20% and 80% at all times and also installing a home charger rather than relying on the public network.
It comes after drivers were told how a free “tweak” could save them hundreds on insurance in three steps.
