After the launch of iPhone 15 series, many reports have hinted that Apple is working on bring several new changes to the iPhone 16 series, anticipated for release in September 2024. Now, a new leak suggests that Apple’s iPhone 16 lineup will not feature the return of Touch ID fingerprint authentication technology.
Apple will continue with Face ID as the sole biometric authentication method for the iPhone 16 series. The information comes from an integrated circuit expert on Weibo with a track record for sharing information about Apple’s plans.
In a new post, they explained that most of the equipment originally used to manufacture the chips required for the iPhone’s version of Touch ID has apparently now been permanently shut down, with the only remaining units used for the third-generation iPhone SE, suggesting that Apple has no plans to resurrect Touch ID as a method to authenticate on the iPhone in the immediate future.
According to a report from MacRumors, the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro is expected to have a larger display around 6.3 inches, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max is anticipated to feature an even larger display of about 6.9 inches.
Also, all the iPhone 16 models might include a new physical “Capture Button,” however, its purpose is currently unknown. The iPhone 16 Pro models are also expected to have an improved 48MP Ultra Wide camera for capturing higher-resolution photos with more detail in 0.5X mode.
In 2024, the standard iPhone 16 models may see an expansion of the Action Button, a feature only available on the iPhone 15 Pro models. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are likely to feature an A17 chip, but it’s rumored to be a different version than the A17 Pro chip used in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models.
Additionally, iOS 18 is expected to bring new Siri features powered by large language models, while on-device AI features may stay exclusive to the iPhone 16 models.
