iPhone 12 mini Modded to Feature Dual Ports, USB-C and Lightning Port Can Be Used for Charging and Listening to Audio – Wccftech

Apple is gradually transitioning to USB-C on the iPad from Lightning ports. We also hear that Apple will use the new ports on the iPhone 15 models later this year. Users have long wanted USB-C on the iPhone, but Apple always went with its proprietary Lightning port instead. Well, a technician managed to add a working USB-C port to the iPhone 12 mini alongside a Lightning port. Scroll down to read more details on dual ports in the iPhone 12 mini mod.

A technician mods the iPhone 12 mini with dual charging ports – USB-C and Lightning ports both functional

A user named “Hyphaistos3672” shared the video on YouTube, highlighting the steps he took to put a USB-C and Lightning port on the iPhone 12 mini. The technician had to rearrange the internals in the iPhone 12 mini due to the lack of space caused by an additional port. He removed the speaker to create space for the extra port and connected the USB-C to the existing hardware. The speaker had to be added later on.

After the iPhone 12 mini was reassembled, the USB-C and Lightning ports were tested by connecting it to a Mac and surprisingly, the ports were in perfect working condition. It remains to be seen if the modded iPhone could be charged by both ports at the same time. The device is one of a kind to rock two ports for the same purpose.

If you think the mod is pointless, the mod could be put to good use. For instance, you do not have the option available on the iPhone to charge the device and listen to audio via wired headphones at the same time. With the USB-C and Lightning ports working together, you can plug in your device to a power source and connect your wired headphones. Previously, you had to buy a dedicated adapter to accomplish the same operation. You can check out the video below for more details.

Apple removed the headphone jack on the iPhone back in 2016. It gathered a lot of negative attention on social media and news outlets but Apple called its decision “courageous“. Apple’s competitors were quick to take advantage and took a jab at Apple for removing the headphone jack. However, the same companies removed the headphone jack on their respective flagships soon after.

The iPhone has been a victim of a lot of mods recently. Technicians are not only modding the iPhone but also managed to put a USB-C port on Apple’s AirPods case that originally comes with a Lightning port. What are your thoughts on the dual charging ports on the iPhone 12 mini? Would you rather use Lightning or a USB-C port for charging the iPhone? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
