Influential WWE Hall of Famer 'Superstar' Billy Graham passes away at 79

Legendary WWE Hall of Famer “Superstar” Billy Graham, known for revolutionizing the portrayal of professional wrestlers, has sadly passed away at the age of 79, as confirmed by WWE. Graham‘s dynamic personality, extravagant fashion style, charismatic interviews, and impressive physique established the blueprint for a generation of Superstars that followed in his footsteps.

Battling Health Issues

Born Eldridge Wayne Coleman, Graham faced health challenges following his wrestling career. In his autobiography, he revealed a history of drug abuse and underwent a liver transplant in 2002. Over the next decade, Graham continued to struggle with liver problems. In April, his family shared that he had been hospitalized for over four months, experiencing significant weight loss and battling an infection in his ears, skull, and sinus cavity. Later, acute kidney failure, dehydration, and organ failure were reported. Despite doctors’ recommendation to remove him from life support, Graham’s wife, Valerie, refused.

A Glittering Career

Prior to his involvement in professional wrestling, Graham had a notable career in the Canadian Football League and as a bodybuilder. He made his debut with the World Wide Wrestling Federation (now WWE) in 1975 and achieved three world titles during his 15-year tenure as a wrestler before transitioning to a managerial and commentator role.

However, Graham’s impact extended beyond his in-ring performances. His flamboyant character, bold interviews, distinctive wardrobe, and colorful facial hair made him a beloved figure among fans. He played a pivotal role in shifting the wrestling landscape, encouraging the company to create larger-than-life personas for its talents. His famous tagline, “The man of the hour, the man with the power, too sweet to be sour!” became synonymous with his charismatic persona.
