India, US discuss export control on dual use items


Ahead of the first meeting of the US-India Strategic Trade Dialogue (USISTD) next month, India and the US on Friday discussed export control issues related to items of dual use. Dual-use goods can be used for both civilian military applications.

Thea Rozman Kendler, assistant secretary for Export Administration of US Department of Commerce, met Indian government officials and industry to discuss dual-use export controls issues.

The two sides launched the dialogue last month to deepen engagement on the area of aligning export controls and information sharing.
“We focus on our common interest in secure trade. Export controls provide that foundation or building block to protect global peace and security while not unduly interfering with commercial commerce,” Kendler said.

The dialogue, she said, would prove a building block for the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET).

“Robust strategic trade controls enable us to share technology that we can’t share with other,..” she added
