India aims to produce 10 million EVs annually by 2030: Sudhendu Sinha, Niti Aayog – ETEnergyWorld


New Delhi: India plans to produce 10 million electric vehicles by 2030, as part of a larger plan to boost electric mobility and move towards clean transportation solutions, according to Sudhendu Sinha, Adviser (Infrastructure Connectivity – Transport and Electric Mobility) at Niti Aayog.

“By 2030, India aims to produce 10 million EVs annually, creating around five crore employment positions,” he said, while speaking at a panel discussion in ETEnergyworld Energy Leadership Summit here. “This ambitious goal reflects India’s determination to lead the global transition to electric mobility and create a significant impact on job creation,” he added.

Sinha also shared his insights on the success of India’s EV adoption, stating that the country has emerged as the fastest country globally in EV adoption, surpassing the progress of many others within a short span.

The Panel Discussion on the topic “Electric Mobility: Closing the Emissions Gap” also witnessed participation from Ashish Kundra, Principal Secretary & Commissioner (Transport), Government of NCT of Delhi; and Nishant Arya, Vice Chairman & MD, JBM Group.

The panel discussed the future of electric nobility in India, and explored various aspects of EV adoption, highlighting India’s success and plans for the future. The panelists also highlighted the success of electric buses under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme, showcasing its positive impact on public transportation.

Kundra highlighted the importance of strengthening the EV supply chain through Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes. “Strengthening the entire value chain, including cathode manufacturing, critical minerals and materials sourcing, and quality recycling ecosystems, is crucial,” he said. Kundra also said the government is committed to incentivizing EV manufacturing to build a robust and self-sufficient supply chain.

The panelists also acknowledged the significance of technological advancements in driving EV adoption. Speaking at the discussion, Arya highlighted the importance of continuous innovation and research and development (R&D) efforts. “Technological advancements are crucial. Copy-pasting technology does not work, instead, we must benchmark, learn, and develop solutions tailored to India’s specific needs,” he said.

Arya also emphasized upon the need to embrace latest technology to enhance the performance and appeal of EVs in the Indian market. The ETEnergy Leadership Summit 2023 provided a platform for industry leaders to collaborate and chart a path for the future of electric mobility in India.
