I’m going to sell my home of 18 years as newbuilds have turned my life into a nightmare – they block our driveways

A FURIOUS local has told how his life has been turned into a nightmare by newbuild construction workers.

Peter Walker, 59, has lived in Beckhampton Road, in Bestwood, Nottingham, across from the building site, for 18 years.

But now he thinks he may have to sell up and move away because of the construction of the 131 council homes.

Mr Walker says the works are becoming a “nightmare” for the community.

He told Nottingham Live: “None of the residents are happy.”

“They keep blocking access to residents’ driveways. It is becoming a nightmare.”

The vast development by Nottingham City Homes on an old school playing field is being undertaken by housing giant Lovells.

Mr Walker added: “They are not supposed to work before 8am and after 5pm. This is a residential area.

“There is no consideration, no respect for the residents. They do not seem to care. I heard the lorries at 6.30am.

“They started the plant before 8am. And it is just getting worse. Traffic jams outside.”

He said: “I am thinking about selling off because I had enough and they are going to be here for another year.”

It comes after other residents last year told how their homes were being ruined by dirt floating over from the construction site.

Mum-of-two Laura Baker, 35, told The Sun: “It’s a nightmare. I know building new homes is a big job but there’s been no consideration for us.

“My blinds have turned black because of the amount of dust that blows in when my windows are open.

“I’ve given up even trying to clean the car. There’s no point. No-one is happy about it.

“The other day it honestly looked like we were in a sand storm. That’s how bad it was.

“I work from home so it’s not like I can get away from it.

“We thought they might come over and apologise – but nothing.”

Interim Regional Managing Director for Lovell East Midlands, said: “We are aware that a saw was started on site just ahead of core hours of working this week.

“We apologise to any residents disrupted and will be putting this in writing as soon as possible. We have reconfirmed the correct core hours to all subcontractors to avoid this happening again.

“We are not aware, and have had no reports, of site vehicles parking on driveways and all parking continues to be confined to the site. However, large vehicles may need to turn or let other vehicles through on occasion.”

A Nottingham City Council spokesperson said: “We are working with Lovell to make sure that everything possible is being done to minimise disruption to residents while this development takes shape to provide more new homes for Nottingham people.”
