Hair loss is a common phenomenon that affects millions of people in the UK, including men and women.
While some shedding is natural and more severe hair loss is typically caused by genetics, there are methods out there to help prevent it from happening.
And one expert claims he actually managed to restore some of his locks using a number of techniques.
Registered doctor Anthony Youn, known as “America’s holistic plastic surgeon”, took to his YouTube channel to share his methods to tackle hair loss with his millions of subscribers.
Despite “never” having hair loss problems before he explained how his wife noticed his hair was thinning at the top while on holiday.
“I knew that I had to act immediately,” he said.
“If you lose too much hair and you have areas that are completely bald, there’s nothing that you can do short of surgery to help grow that back.”
Yoga and medication
His first port of call was to get his stress levels under control.
Dr Youn said: “It’s not uncommon for people having episodes of extreme stress to find their hair is falling out.”
Rather than quitting his job he “became more consistent” with his yoga and meditation routines.
“I now practise yoga twice a week, pretty regularly, and I meditate more than I ever did before,” he said.
Supplements
“Now nutritional deficiencies are another major cause of hair loss whether you’re a man or a woman,” he explained.
Therefore, he started taking a branded supplement called Nutrafol which is said to contain vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, biotin, iodine, zinc and selenium.
He said: “Nutrafol contains vitamins, minerals and amino acids and nutrients such as biotin that specifically target thinning hair and cause your hair to get thicker.”
Dr Youn said he had been taking four capsules every night with his dinner.
Laser treatment
A potentially pricey option, Dr Youn said he started using a laser hair growth system – which is essentially a helmet you wear on your head.
He said: “These lasers can actually target your hair follicles. They can help increase metabolism in the area and put the hair into a growth phase.
“Now, I specifically use the iRestore hair growth system, and this basically is a helmet that I put on my head for 25 minutes.
“I use my iRestore every other night, typically while watching TV or reading a book.
“There’s absolutely no pain associated with it.”
Shampoo
Dr Youn also swapped out his regular hair washing products for rosemary oil shampoo.
He was inspired by a study that found the oil to be as effective as minoxidil – a commonly used medication to treat hair loss.
“So you take basically rosemary oil, like an essential oil, you dilute it with a carrier oil and you apply it to your scalp,” he said.
Dr Youn said he had been following this routine for six months.
He said: “Now, I still have some thinning of the hair on the top of my head but it’s definitely improved.
“If I had to make a guess, I’d probably say it’s about 40 to 50 percent improvement at least from what I used to have.”
To others looking to restore their hair, he added: “Remember, eat real food, use clean skin care and only consider actual plastic surgery as a last resort.”
