Idris Elba says he no longer identifies as ‘Black actor’, reveals why

Idris Elba, who plays Luther, claims that he no longer refers to himself as a “Black actor” since the term placed him in a “box,” and a “obsession” with race may stifle goals and progress.

Although he is a prominent part of the Black community, the Golden Globe winner told Esquire UK in an interview that was published on Wednesday that such separatism in Hollywood may hinder performers.

We are racially preoccupied as humans. And such fixation may seriously impede people’s goals and development.

The roles of drug lord Stringer Bell in the HBO series “The Wire” and DCI John Luther in the BBC crime series “Luther” are where Elba is most recognised. “Beast,” “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” and “The Suicide Squad” are just a few of the other movies he has worked on.

Racism, in Elba’s opinion, “is extremely real,” but Elba also thinks that “it’s only as powerful as you let it be.”

“When I understood that using the term “Black actor” put me in a box, I stopped using it. We must develop. We need to. Simply put, our skin is nothing more than that. I’ll stop now,” he said.Elba said in another interview that his desire to work in entertainment was never motivated by the need to overcome obstacles faced by Black males.

He said, “I did it because I believed that was a fantastic career and I could do well at it. As you move up the ladder, questions about what it’s like to be the first Black person to achieve this or that are asked. Everything is precisely how it would be if I were a white person. This is a first for me. I’m not interested in being the first Black person.

The Netflix movie “Luther: The Fallen Sun,” which premieres in cinemas on February 24, is the big-screen continuation of Elba’s adored crime series “Luther.”
