I went to The Body Lab and emerged a new person from an urban oasis


My experience at The Body Lab started off strong with a relaxing soak in the sensory deprivation tub.

This therapy aims to vanish all sensations of gravity, temperature, touch, sight and sound – which together account for 90 percent of neuromuscular activity. This way, it’s claimed, the body can conserve and redirect vast amounts of physical and mental energy, leading to ultra-deep relaxation that resets the body’s hormonal and metabolic balance, strengthens resistance and accelerates recovery.

While I admittedly found it somewhat nerve-wracking at first, I soon acclimated to the dark setting and began rapidly dozing off before completely letting go of all my senses.

Aware that taking a nap was completely safe (and even recommended by Calum, the Head of Exercise Science at The Body Lab), I soon realised I had slept for a whole hour before some of the salt water made its way into my left eye.

Slightly alarmed by the sting, which prompted me to scramble of the tub and into the shower, I took a moment to appreciate all the luxurious details around me – soft towels of different sizes, the comfiest robe and a spacious and sleek shower that was equipped with The Body Lab’s own range of body wash, shampoo and body oil.

Once I was done getting, I was given a tour of the incredibly well equipped gym before I was led into the infrared sauna, which according to fans harnesses the power of light to warm and detoxifying the body from the inside out.

These full-spectrum Infrared Cabins use various wavelengths of infrared light to promote healing and revitalisation, penetrating deeper into the body’s soft tissue and increasing circulation.

This sauna is different to the ones most of us are used to because it feels less stuffy and hot while still prompting a good sweat within minutes.

It is recommended by champions of the treatment to have an infrared sauna regularly for its suggested benefits in accelerating fat loss and increasing metabolism, muscle pain relief, ease for joint pain and stiffness and improved skin health.

While my 10-minute session may not have the same effect as continuous treatment, I noticed a mood boost, which helped me leave The Body Lab feeling more relaxed and revitalised.

They have been masters at using up the scarce space in central London with precision, making each section functional without feeling cluttered or too tight, while maintaining the opulent yet minimalist decor.
