A MAN saved his mum £1,700 and helped her pass her MOT – because he didn’t fall for a ridiculous garage con.
The motoring whizz, from Tarporley in Cheshire, took to YouTube with a video revealing how he dodged the rip-off.
He said: “My mum’s Renault Scenic had a very blocked DPF, or diesel particulate filter.
“It catches all the stuff coming out of your exhaust and the idea is is that you floor it and you blow it all back out again in chunks.
“The DPF on this car has clogged up in a big way.
“The garage’s answer was to fit a hugely expensive brand new part, which is fine.
“But I thought I could sort it for much, much less.”
He added: “The garage has quoted £1,700 – and that’s not including VAT or labour. An incredible amount of money.
“It’s now upon me to do one of two things. Either try and fix this car for a huge amount or we scrap it.”
The man said that Renault have “put a block” on spare DPF parts, pushing the costs of replacing it even higher.
So he decided to manually remove the DPF himself by unscrewing the bolts holding it in place.
He then replaced it with a much cheaper filter from a different brand he had bought from a parts shop.
The savvy motorist said: “Car’s done, Mum’s happy. We fixed it for £800 instead of £2,500 – which is a big old chunk of change where I come from.”
A major car brand has released its first EV – but has ditched a key feature.
