HSBC to close 114 branches this year with some closing in days – full list

Many more banks are choosing to shutter branches, impacting those who prefer to conduct their affairs in person. However, with a shift towards digital banking online or via mobile, banks state some branches have to close.

HSBC is taking the decision to shut 114 branches from this month onwards, and some have just days left before permanent closure.

The bank explained over the past five years, use of the HSBC branch network by regular customers has fallen by 65 percent.

In addition, HSBC stated footfall in the majority of closing branches has reduced by at least 50 percent.

Some of the closing branches are now serving fewer than 250 customers a week, the bank added.

It attributed some of the loss of in-person customers to the COVID-19 pandemic.

HSBC also flagged a shift towards digital banking, with 97.5 percent of its transactions completed digitally.

Since 2017, the bank states usage of its mobile app has almost tripled.

Jackie Uhi, managing director of UK distribution at HSBC, said: “People are changing the way they bank and footfall in many branches is at an all-time low, with no signs of it returning.

“Banking remotely is becoming the norm for the vast majority of us.

“Not only can we do it anywhere at any time of day or night, many more things can be done at the customers’ convenience and don’t rely on a branch visit.

“The decision to close a branch is never easy or taken lightly, especially if we are the last branch in an area.

“We’ve invested heavily in our ‘post closure’ strategy, including providing free tablet devices to selected branch customers who do not already have a device to bank digitally, alongside one-to-one coaching to help them migrate to digital banking.”
