Hope for thousands of struggling energy customers as regulator mulls major change to rules

THERE may be hope for millions and energy customers as the energy regulator is considering a change to the rules.

Ofgem is to review the checks and balances energy firms have around any decision to put a customer on a pre-payment meter.

The regulator said: “If we find that they have not taken due care in this process, we will take further legal action against them.”

Ofgem is also considering cheaper social tariffs for some on low incomes.

It comes as Grant Shapps has also written to companies demanding they stop forcibly moving households on to more expensive pre-paid energy tariffs.

Citizens Advice estimates that 3.2 million people ran out of credit on their prepayment meter last year, the equivalent of one every 10 seconds.
