Hilo One smart e-scooter launches with AI tech

A new e-scooter has been launched by former Aston Martin and Nissan boss Andy Palmer.

The Hilo One has been partly developed by Lotus Engineering and features AI technology to alert the rider and pedestrians to potential dangers.

The Hilo One’s unique scooter design features a 12.5-inch front wheel that is said to aid stability and control – especially over broken surfaces. It folds up cleverly, enclosing the dirty wheels so it can be more easily carried.

Palmer, who co-founded Hilo, commented; “E-scooters have faced challenges with safety and public perception. The Hilo One is an e-scooter that addresses these concerns head-on. I believe in the potential of e-scooters to revolutionise urban transportation. I also understand the importance of safety, comfort, and rider experience.”

Using AI, the Hilo One alerts the rider of impending dangers using visual and audible warnings, plus haptic feedback in the handlebars. Using the Hilo app, it can also communicate with the rider’s smart Unit 1 helmet.

The AI also works with a full perimeter light projection system to let road users and pedestrians know if they become dangerously close. Full-perimeter lighting projects a pool of light around the vehicle, increasing the perceived size of the e-scooter in low light and letting others know when the rider is braking, indicating, or getting too close.

The Hilo One is powered by an InoBat battery that gives it a 25-mile range and top speed of 15.5mph. It can be docked and charged in the boot of a car enabling drivers to park further away from their destination and use the Hilo to complete the journey. Then once there, it can self-stand, either vertically or horizontally or be wheeled along using the telescopic handle.

As well as in-car charging, a home-charging Dock is available, which can be wall mounted to or fit under a desk. The Hilo One plugs into the Dock either horizontally or vertically, charging the e-scooter without cables.

Robin Harris, CEO of Hilo, said, “We have a progressive vision to redefine micro mobility, creating class-defining products that leverage the latest AI road-scanning technology and perimeter safety lighting. Hilo’s ambitious goal to create an e-scooter that stands out without compromising safety and the ride experience was appealing in a sector still in its infancy and likely to see an exponential increase in innovation.”

First deliveries of the Hilo One are set to be in 2024, with the pricing expected to start at £1,750. An initial Founders’ Edition is on sale now at https://hiloev.co.
