Without AM radio in cars, millions of Americans could lose access to crucial emergency alerts, witnesses told a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee, Oma Seddiq reports.

“Our belief is that AM radio is a critical source of information to our citizens during a crisis,” Lt. Colonel Chris DeMaise, New Jersey State Police’s homeland security branch commander, testified during a hearing Tuesday.

Lawmakers last month unveiled bipartisan legislation (H.R. 3413, S. 1669) to require automakers to keep AM radio in cars at no additional charge after some manufacturers started removing it from new electric vehicles. The automakers say …
