New Delhi: Fire Safety Management Academy at Rohini will undergo a revamp with a mini-sports complex, upgradation of security systems and better infrastructure in the complex, according to a Delhi government proposal.
A senior official of the fire department said that the training centre would now have an advanced gymnasium, a badminton court and a table tennis court. There will also be a wrestling court. The centre has over 200 students at present.
“The furniture which are over 20 years old will be replaced and a centralised air condition system will be installed,” he added.
This centre also works as a regional training centre of Nagpur. The official said that this session, batches of station officers from across India too were undergoing training at this centre. The students do pre-service training at this academy.
A senior official said digital classrooms had already been started and the next target was to have labs which would have simulations for different fire emergencies. The personnel will be trained to tackle flashovers and backdraughts, which are common occurrences during fires.
A flashover is a situation where the contents of a room burn instantly because of a steady increase in temperature caused by the liberation of heat from a source or a small fire in a closed space. In a backdraught, the fire spreads quickly after it gets enough air due to the sudden opening of a door or window of a closed room.

According to the data, DFS received 15,610 fire-related calls last year and 689 people were rescued.
