Henry Cavill's Highlander remake could be a new film franchise like the original, reveals director

Director Chad Stahelski has revealed that his 2023 reboot of the 1986 fantasy adventure film Highlander has the potential to be a new film franchise. The Highlander reboot stars Henry Cavill in the lead role.

Chad Stahelski is the director of the acclaimed John Wick film franchise starring Keanu Reeves. The director will now be at the helm of affairs for the 2023 remake of the classic fantasy movie, Highlander. The original Highlander movie had four sequels and three spin-off television series.

The Henry Cavill film could have some sequels and a prequel, said Stahelski. The filmmaker was speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he revealed that the film has “some very good elements”.

“The trick is, when you have the tagline, ‘There can only be one’, you can’t just kill everybody the first time,” said Stahelski.

The director revealed about a potential Highlander reboot franchise, “Our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that but we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering, so we have room to grow the property.”

Who starred in the original Highlander film?

The original Highlander movie, released in 1986, starred Christopher Lambert, Clancy Brown and Sean Connery. The fantasy action-adventure film was directed by Russell Mulcahy, and told the story of immortals who battle each other to gain more power. The film was successful due to its storytelling, star cast, and the tagline, ‘There can only be one’. The Highlander OST by the iconic band Queen also was popular, credited to the band’s frontman Freddie Mercury. The movie was such a hit that four sequels were released after it and there were as many as three spin-off television series of Highlander.

What is Henry Cavill’s role in Highlander?

Henry Cavill will be playing the lead role in Highlander. However, it is not known yet if any new dimensions will be added to the well-known classic character.

Chad Stahelski is confident that the Superman actor can carry off the Highlander role.

“Henry obviously has the physicality but that doesn’t mean a whole lot if you can’t carry the empathy of a character that’s lived 500 years,” he explained. The director needed an actor “who could do both”.

This is because the Highlander character’s arc “spans hundreds of years and he becomes many different personalities”, and it shows considerable emotional growth for him.

“Cavill was immediately riffing on the idea of the burden of immortality and you could see in his eyes that he can transform himself from being a young, vibrant soul to an old, wise soul. He had this combination I was fascinated by,” revealed the director of his first meeting with Henry Cavill for Highlander.
