Goal Frenzy Leads Tech Soccer Over Lewis; Lee Scores Hat Trick

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Michigan Tech soccer team racked up five goals in their 5-1 non conference victory at Lewis on Sunday afternoon.

Junior Seulgi Lee, scored her first career goal as a Husky and then scored two more goals to garner her first hat trick for Tech. Makenna Sanom also scored her first career goal in the victory.

Michigan Tech concludes the non conference portion of its schedule with a record of 1-1-2, Lewis moves to 1-3-1 on the season.

“It’s so important to play well on the road and find ways to get a win,” head coach Turk Ozturk said. “I felt that our team came out very determined today to get our first team win of the season. This is a group that was looking for a breakthrough performance and we were able to finish the weekend undefeated.”

The Huskies have been known for being a stellar team on the defensive end. However, the Huskies put together an excellent game on the attack, after only netting two goals through the first three contests.

In fact, Michigan Tech seemingly got everything they wanted against the Flyers, whether it was intercepting passes or bringing the ball back to the defensive zone to set up, the Huskies turned in their most complete game of the early season.

Lee struck early into the game, receiving a pass from Jordan Noble just outside the box, finding herself alone with an open shot from the top of the box landing in the left corner of the net at 4:15.

Lee posted another shot on goal before earning her second career goal due to a bad pass in their defensive zone intercepted by Lee before shooting in nearly the same spot as her first goal, this time, reaching the top right corner of the net in the 16th minute.

The Huskies remained in the Flyers defensive zone for most of the first half, pouring on three corner kicks before finding the back of the net again.

Off a Grace Hoeppner corner, Emilie Clayton found the ball in front of the Flyers net to connect on a header to make it 3-0 in favor of the Black & Gold.

Vanlangevelde faced seven shots in the first half before Bri Barrows checked in for the second half, making her collegiate debut for the Huskies.

The Flyers got on the scoreboard with Elisa Aguilar capitalizing on a penalty kick to make it 3-1 in the fourth minute of action in the second half.

The two teams went scoreless until the 73rd minute when Lee connected on a free kick from the left side of the box to earn a hat trick on the day.

Three minutes later, the Huskies would strike again, with Makenna Sanom getting the ball past the goalkeeper as she fell to conclude the scoring on the day.

In total, the Huskies poured on 18 shots with 13 being on target. Tech also held a six-to-four advantage in corner kicks.

Vanlangevelde made three saves, while Barrows made two in the second half between the posts.

“We had a great weekend and now it’s time to carry this momentum to next weekend with the start of conference play,” Ozturk added.
