VIDEO: Miami’s Mario Cristobal on the win over Bethune-Cookman

The Miami Hurricanes continue to handle business in this early portion of the 2023 season–and the ESPN Football Power Index has taken notice.

UM has now earned solid victories over two strong opponents with a 48-33 win over Texas A&M and a week one 38-3 victory over Miami of Ohio. On Thursday night, the Hurricanes handled FCS opponent Bethune-Cookman, 48-7.

Every week, ESPN updates its Football Power Index based on the results of the games and after three weeks of the 2023 season, the FPI likes the way the Hurricanes have performed.

According to the FPI the Miami Hurricanes rank as the No. 15 overall team in the country–which is what UM ranked after week two. In the preseason, the FPI ranked UM as the No. 29 overall team in the country.

Here’s how the FPI is calculated: The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily.

Amongst ACC teams, Miami only ranks behind No. 10 Florida State. Clemson ranks No. 17 in the FPI after a shaky performance against Duke in a season opening loss.

The FPI projects Miami to finish with a 9.7-2.6 record in 2023 and it gives the Hurricanes an 99.7 percent chance to win six games and earn bowl eligibility. The metric gives UM an 16.9 percent chance at winning the ACC. The FPI gives the Hurricanes a 2.9 percent chance to go undefeated.

The FPI ranks Miami’s offense No. 8 overall in the country. The defense ranks No. 34 nationally.

FPI projects Miami’s remaining strength of schedule as the 51st toughest in the country.

After the second weekend of the season, the FPI’s top five looks like: No. 1 Ohio State, No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Alabama, and No. 5 Southern California.
