From green hydrogen to bioplastics: Budget 2024 pushes sustainable supply chain solutions

The Interim Budget, presented by Minister of Finance, Nirmala Sitharaman, offered a glimpse into India’s fiscal roadmap for the upcoming year. While the focus remained on infrastructure development, social welfare, and fiscal consolidation, there were glimpses of environmentally conscious measures, which can have a ripple effect across sectors.
Embracing the optimistic prospects heralded by Honourable Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Amrit Kaal’ and the vision of ‘Vikshit Bharat’, the government has resolved to adopt economic policies that foster and sustain growth, facilitate inclusive and sustainable development, improve productivity, create opportunities for all, help them enhance their capabilities, and contribute to the generation of resources to power investments and fulfill aspirations.
Optimising the supply chain
The budget’s robust emphasis on boosting capital expenditure by 11.1% underscores the government’s commitment to fostering development. This commitment is further exemplified by the allocation of ₹1 lakh crore for the Green Hydrogen Mission and the focus on sustainable mobility, including expanding metro networks and promoting electric vehicle adoption. Together, these measures reflect a balanced approach where development and sustainability are considered integral to the nation’s progress. The success hinges on how effectively these initiatives are implemented, ensuring minimal environmental damage during infrastructure development.
But what is undeniable is that the budget’s emphasis on developing multimodal logistics infrastructure, including waterways and inland waterways, will improve supply chain efficiency. This could lead to reduced transportation costs for businesses and potentially benefit consumers through lower prices. However, the effectiveness of these initiatives will depend on the pace of action and how bottlenecks in existing infrastructure are addressed.

Sustainable packaging
Perhaps the most intriguing announcement of the interim budget was that a new scheme of bio-manufacturing and bio-foundry will be launched. This will provide environment friendly alternatives to plastics such as biodegradable polymers, bio-plastics, bio-pharmaceuticals and bio-agri-inputs. This scheme has the potential to revolutionize the packaging industry, transforming today’s consumption-led manufacturing landscape to one based on regenerative principles. While the scheme is well-meaning, stricter regulations on single-use plastics could pose challenges for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Long-term benefits of the policy for the environment are undeniable, but the government should provide support and guidance to SMEs for transitioning to sustainable alternatives. This could include financial assistance, technology transfer, and skill development programs.Green goals, bright hopes
On the sustainability and green energy front, Respected Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had announced a scheme to install solar panels on the rooftops of 1 crore households. Respected Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman provided more context about the scheme saying that it will result in Rs 15,000-18,000 saving annually for households while also giving them an opportunity to sell surplus electricity to distribution companies. This will also support and encourage electric vehicles by providing charging solutions. The Interim Budget marks a significant stride toward sustainable development, reflecting our commitment to strategic investments in green initiatives and supply chain optimization. Embracing a circular economy and prioritizing renewable energy sources aligns seamlessly with our vision for a balanced and eco-friendly economic landscape. Together, we foster green growth, shaping a sustainable tomorrow.
