Many places offer free entry and, while you may have to pay for parking, they’ll still make a great value day out.

HOORAY FOR HISTORY: Britain has a rich history – and fortunately you don’t need to be rich to enjoy it.

For instance, Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland is a must-see and one of the best sections which costs nothing to wander is at Walltown Crags near Hexham.

This is one of the listings on the English Heritage’s blog post “23 free places to visit near historical sites”. You’ll find it at English-heritage.org.uk.

GLORIOUS GARDENS: This is the time of year to celebrate the arrival of colourful azaleas and beautiful bluebells.

Late spring is when the National Trust’s Stagshaw Garden in Cumbria springs into life.

The Trust’s walled gardens at Penrose in Cornwall are free to visit.

You can also catch a rare glimpse of stunning private gardens through Open Gardens days, where the entrance fee goes to charity. You can get details online at findagarden.ngs.org.uk.

Charges for some exhibits and parking may apply.

FUN FOR FAMILIES: Check your local council website to find out about nearby spots that offer free family fun.
