So try these fast fixes on a budget.

FLAPJACKS: Flapjacks are always a hit with the family.

Just melt 175g of butter, a tablespoon of golden syrup and 150g of demerara sugar together, then add 250g of porridge oats and stir.

Tip the mixture into a baking tray, press down and cook at 180C/Gas 4 for around 20 minutes to achieve a chewy consistency.

Score into slices five minutes after cooking, and then leave to cool in the tin.

FLATBREAD: Get the kids to help you make a batch of flatbreads — a yummy snack that won’t cost lots of dough!

Mix 300g self-raising flour with half a teaspoon of baking powder, 150ml plain yogurt, a dash of salt and two tablespoons of water.

Knead for a couple of minutes until smooth, then divide into eight pieces for small flatbreads.

Press until flat and fry for two minutes each side in a little vegetable oil.

CHEESY STRAWS: Grab one pack of ready-rolled puff pastry, such as Aldi’s Greenvale Puff Pastry, £1.19, and 60g of a grated hard cheese like cheddar or parmesan.

Sprinkle half the cheese on a sheet of pastry, fold in half, then roll it flat again to the thickness of a pound coin.

The recipe at bbcgoodfood.com will talk you through all steps.

Cut pastry into strips, twist three or four times, then sprinkle with leftover cheese.

Bake in a hot oven for 12 minutes.

MINI MUFFINS: Recipes for mini egg muffins at realfood.tesco.com need just three ingredients — six eggs, 360g of cottage cheese and a jar of roasted peppers.

Mix the whisked eggs and cottage cheese together, then drain and dry the peppers, cut into strips and add to the egg mixture.

Grease a 12-hole muffin tin and pour in the mixture, then bake in a hot oven for 16 to 18 minutes.
