First graduates complete GF Fab 8 maintenance technician … – Vermont Biz

The program is Vermont’s first apprenticeship in semiconductor design and manufacturing

Vermont Business Magazine Today, the National Institute of Innovation and Technology (NIIT), the leader in developing the nation’s semiconductor talent pipeline, and GlobalFoundries (Nasdaq: GFS), one of the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturers, have established a Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) at GF’s site in Essex Junction, Vermont.

This program leverages the initial pilot established at GF’s site in Malta, NY, making it the first national, multi-site RAP in the semiconductor industry. It is designed specifically to meet GF’s technician workforce needs and to provide the skills necessary to progress into higher level positions over time.

“Here in Vermont, GF produces many of the chips used around the world today in various applications including smartphones, automobiles and wireless infrastructure. Like many high-tech employers, access to qualified talent and effective training programs is a priority for GF,” said Ken McAvey, Vice President and General Manager of GF’s Fab 9. “We see the NIIT GAINS Registered Apprenticeship Program as an integral part of a comprehensive training program that benefits both our employees and GF, and it will help us attract, train and retain the talent we need to be successful in Vermont.”

The GF initiative is part of the NIIT’s “Growing Apprenticeships in Nanotechnology and Semiconductors” (GAINS) program, which was designed specifically to meet the needs of the semiconductor industry. The program is being scaled throughout the nation by NIIT under an exclusive U.S. Department of Labor contract to lead the expansion of the nation’s workforce development in the semiconductor and nanotechnology sectors. The innovative, competency-based program will leverage the NIIT’s National Talent Hub to identify individuals, assess and align skills and target training to meet industry requirements.

“NIIT’s GAINS program is a collaborative endeavor that requires the support of both regional stakeholders and employers to achieve success,” said Mike Russo, President and CEO of NIIT. “GF has been a great employer to work with, and the regional partners in the process – the Institute for American Apprenticeships (IAA), Vermont Technical College (Vermont Tech) and the Vermont Department of Labor – were integral as we established a strong program that will benefit Vermonters, as well as GF, for years to come.”

“The Institute for American Apprenticeships with support from the Vermont Department of Labor is excited to partner with GF and the National Institute for Innovation and Technology in the development and launch of their apprenticeship program in Vermont! This program will create exciting career opportunities in the semiconductor industry for Vermonters,” said Matthew McKenney, President & CEO of the Institute for American Apprenticeships.
