BALTIMORE (WBFF) —
More than a dozen juveniles were arrested for various crimes within the past week, and for some of them, it wasn’t their first or even second arrest.
According to Baltimore Police, the Department has arrested 15 juveniles since November 22.
Most recently, BPD says seven juveniles were arrested for auto theft in north Baltimore on November 26.
Investigators say the teens ranged in age between 12 and 15 years old, and that one of the 15-year-old suspects had been arrested eight times.
This, speaking to what many people, police, and prosecutors stress, is a problem when it comes to consequences and accountability within the juvenile justice system.
“Juveniles who are accused of committing violent crimes, like carjacking should be detained for some period of time until their case can be adjudicated and they’re not,” said Jason Johnson, law enforcement expert.
It’s not just auto thefts.
On November 24, BPD says officers arrested three teens, including two 15-year-old males and a 14-year-old male for the armed carjacking of a 76-year-old man in south Baltimore.
According to police, one of the 15-year-old suspects had been arrested three times for stolen auto offenses. Police say all three suspects were transported to juvenile booking.
In southeast Baltimore, police say officers arrested four males, including three juveniles for the armed robbery and assault of a man near the corner of Eastern and South Patterson Park avenues on November 22.
That same day and just 15 minutes beforehand, investigators say officers arrested two 15-year-old males on drug charges and handgun violations in east Baltimore.
Investigators say one of the teens has been arrested previously for narcotics.
Both were transported to juvenile booking, police say.
Other crimes involving juveniles that have not yet ended in an arrest include several armed robberies in the Patterson Park and Pigtown areas, police say.
