Fermented foods may help 'prevent the progression' of cognitive decline seen in dementia

The doctor added: “Lactic-acid producing bacteria from certain fermented foods are major producers of GABA.

“In the brain, GABA is a neurotransmitter whose principal role is to lessen the ability of a nerve cell to receive, create or send chemical messages to other nerve cells, which is why GABA is known for producing a calming effect, and has been suggested to help in improving mood and cognitive function.

“So, fermented foods that help support the diversity and abundance of the bacteria by providing live sources of beneficial bacteria will in turn help support a healthy gut, neurotransmitter production and communication with the brain to maintain mood and brain processing function.”

With this in mind, the expert recommended striving for a variety of fermented foods to achieve the greatest results.
