Thursday, February 1, 2024 – As worries about children’s mental health and safety online grow, executives such as Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and X’s Linda Yaccarino are scheduled to appear in Washington today. The leaders of TikTok, Discord, and Snap are all scheduled to attend.

Before agreeing to testify at the Senate Judiciary Committee meeting, Ms Yaccarino, Discord CEO Jason Citron, and Snap CEO Evan Spiegel were served with subpoenas; however, Mr Zuckerberg and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew freely consented to testify.

Politicians argue that large digital corporations aren’t doing enough to safeguard youngsters from sexual exploitation. They’ve been discussing stronger restrictions and demanding that CEOs explain what they’ve done so far. In February 2023, the Senate Judiciary Committee convened a hearing on the same issue, during which witnesses and politicians agreed that businesses should be held accountable. Legislators have now introduced laws like the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), which Snapchat recently supported.
