Faculty and Staff Briefs are produced monthly to recognize accomplishments and provide a space where honors, awards, bylines, presentations, grants, service and any other notable items can be showcased.
HONORS AND AWARDS
Michael Elwardany, Ph.D. (FAMU-FSU College of Engineering) received the Fred Burggraf Award for excellence in transportation research from the Transportation Research Board for his work on the paper “Evaluating the Sensitivity of Intermediate Temperature Performance Tests to Multiple Loose Mixture Aging Temperatures Using the FHWA Accelerated Loading Facility’s RAP/RAS Experiment,” published in SAGE Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board.
John Kelsay, Ph.D. (Department of Religion) was selected as the 2023 Distinguished Scholar for the International Ethics Section of the International Studies Association.
Pablo Maurette, Ph.D. (Department of English) was awarded a Huntington Fellowship from the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens for a spring 2024 residency.
Pamela Keel, Ph.D. (Department of Psychology) was selected to receive the Toy Caldwell-Colbert Award for Distinguished Educator in Clinical Psychology from Division 12, Society of Clinical Psychology of the American Psychological Association.
Pamela Keel, Ph.D. (Department of Psychology) was selected as the 2023 inaugural recipient of the Academy for Eating Disorders Leadership in Mentoring Award.
Zina Ward, Ph.D. (Department of Philosophy) won the Popper Prize for the best article published in the British Journal for the Philosophy of Science in 2022.
Lynn Panton, Ph.D. (College of Health and Human Sciences) was recognized with the 2023 Henry J. Montoye Scholar Award from the Southeast Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine.
Martin Mende, Ph.D. and Maura Scott, Ph.D. (College of Business) received the Journal of Consumer Psychology’s 2023 Best Paper Award for “Improving Financial Inclusion through Communal Financial Orientation: How Financial Service Providers Can Better Engage Consumers in Banking Deserts,” published in 2020.
Bruce Thyer, Ph.D. and Amy L. Ai, Ph.D. (College of Social Work) were identified among the top 100 contributing scholars in the article “Who are the Top 100 Contributors to Social Work Journal Scholarship? Nathan Stoltzfus, Ph.D. (Department of History) was selected as a nominee for this year’s Honors Thesis Mentor Award from the University Honors Program.

Sarah Butler (University Housing) was elected to serve as the Director of Communications for the Southeastern Association of Housing Officers.
Latara Lampkin, Ph.D. (Florida Center for Reading Research) was selected as an inaugural member of the governing body of the Tallahassee-Leon County Council on the Status of Men and Boys. It will work to provide support and services to the men and boys most at risk for violence, address the underlying causes of violence, and improve the overall quality of life for communities impacted by violent crime.
Eundeok Kim, Ph.D. (Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship) was elected Chair of the Social Entrepreneurship SIG at the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship for 2024. This year, she will also play a role in the leadership team as Chair-Elect.
Shannon Hall-Mills, Ph.D. (College of Communication and Information) coordinated FSU School of Communication and Science Disorders’ participation in a career fair at Godby High School in Tallahassee, FL.

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announced that the Learning Systems Institute (LSI) will welcome approximately 20 South African college administrators and officials to Tallahassee. The delegation will visit as part of the Community College Administrator Program, implemented by LSI under the direction of Jeffrey Milligan, Ph.D.
Ana Marty, Ph.D. and Rachel Keune, Ed.D. (Learning Systems Institute) facilitated a Participatory Action Research activity as part of USAID’s Advancing Basic Education in the Philippines Activity.
Research Triangle Institute International extended its contract with the Learning Systems Institute to continue supporting the Advancing Basic Education in the Philippines activity. Led by Ana Marty, Ph.D. (Learning Systems Institute), the LSI team will use its extensive experience to build the research capacity of Bicol University, West Visayas State University and Department of Education stakeholders, focusing on early literacy.
Sherri Winsett led a Collaborate, Plan, Align, Learn, Motivate and Share team including Krystal Sellers, Ed.D., Carrie Meyers, Julie Chappell, Zaida McGinley and Jamie Santillo (Learning Systems Institute) that conducted a professional development session in Tallahassee where participants collaborated to create and write an English language arts text unit plan to assist Florida teachers.
The Collaborate, Plan, Align, Learn, Motivate and Share team at the Learning Systems Institute hosted an expert think tank on Florida’s new financial literacy initiative. Members Kaniesha Clark and Robert Hanna led the collaboration with Jim Reynolds and LSI Director Rabieh Razzouk, MBA (Learning Systems Institute) along with a diverse group of financial professionals including Joe Calhoun, Ph.D. to develop units of study with engaging and effective resources to help students build knowledge and skills related to financial literacy.
