CHARLOTTE, N.C. – New study reveals the top five most downloaded and deleted social media apps in North Carolina.

The research, conducted by social media experts Viralyft, analyzed Google Trends data, for searches over the past 12 months to discover which social media apps are being downloaded and deleted the most in each state over the past year

Top five deleted social media in North Carolina

According to the research, Facebook is the number one most-deleted social media in North Carolina, with a monthly search volume of 11,291 on average for ‘Deactivate Facebook’ and ‘Delete Facebook’. Facebook is the most prevalent deleted social media in most states, with it being the most searched for to delete in 31 states.

The second most deleted social media app in North Carolina is Instagram, with residents searching to delete it 11,076 times a month on average. Instagram is the most deleted nationally and has a search volume of 372,685 a month on average to delete the social media app.

North Carolina’s third most deleted app is Snapchat, with an average monthly search volume of 4,956. Snapchat is the third most deleted app in 46 different states, whilst Iowa, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming have Instagram as their third most deleted app.

The fourth most searched for deleted app in North Carolina is X (formerly Twitter) with a search volume of 2,297 on average a month. X is the fourth most searched-for app to delete in every single state in the US.

In the fifth spot for most deleted social media app is Telegram, with North Carolina residents searching to delete it 1,385 time a month on average. Telegram is the fifth most deleted in 36 states and is the fifth most deleted social media nationally, with a monthly average search volume of 51,882.

Top five downloaded social media in North Carolina

The most downloaded social media in North Carolina is YouTube, with an average monthly search volume of 5.39 million. Nationally, YouTube has the highest search volume to be downloaded with 174 million searches a month on average for ‘YouTube Download’.

North Carolina residents are searching to download Facebook the second most, with a monthly search volume of 5.15 million. on average. In the second spot there are 28 states searching to download Facebook, and 22 searching to download YouTube.

The third most downloaded social media in North Carolina is X (formerly Twitter), with an average monthly search volume of 922,532. X is the third most downloaded social media in 31 states, whilst Instagram is the 19 other states.

North Carolina’s fourth most downloaded social media is Instagram, with a monthly average volume of 876,452. Instagram is downloaded the third most nationally, with an average search volume of 30 million per month.

The fifth most downloaded social media in North Carolina is LinkedIn, with a monthly search volume of 382,336. Linked in is the fifth most downloaded social media in 22 states and fifth downloaded nationally with an average monthly search volume of 11.5 million.

A spokesperson for Viralyft commented on the study: “Social media apps are often downloaded and deleted frequently due to many reasons. One common reason could be privacy concerns, and data security can prompt users to delete social media for more secure alternatives.

“Other worries can include the introduction of new AI features and their mishaps on social media platforms, as new technology malfunctions can panic people.

“The addictive nature of social media, with endless scrolling and notifications, can also lead users to feel anxious and overwhelmed and prompt a break by deleting the app.

“Ultimately, it is important to note that app popularity and trends can play a significant role in the cycle of downloading and deleting social media apps.”
