Expert reveals the most popular emoji in 2023 – and what it really means

Which emoji is your favourite?

An expert has unveiled the top 10 most-used emojis of 2023 – and what it says about the nation.

Keith Broni, 32, says the top 10 list shows that people have been trying their best to feel positive this year.

According to Keith, the editor-in-chief of Emojipedia, the top three most used this year are crying with laughter, rolling on the floor laughing and the red heart.

And of the new emojis unveiled in 2023, the most popular have proved to be the pink heart, the shaking face, the blue heart and the grey heart.

Keith says despite emojis first being introduced in 2008, they’re only getting more popular – dispelling suggestions Gen Z are less keen on them than older Brits.

‘The most-used emojis of 2023 were a selection of the absolute classics from the emoji keyboard,’ said Keith, from Dublin.

The ‘crying with laughter’ face topped this year’s table

‘Number one was the “tears of joy” face, while number two was “rolling on the floor laughing”.

‘”Heart eyes” came in at number six, while “smiling face with hearts” is the tenth most-used.’

Keith believes the positive mix is probably due to people spending a lot of time with friends and family.

‘Heart eyes’ came in at number six

‘The top 10 indicates that people are continuing to express positivity among their friends and family,’ he said.

Given the number of classics taking up this year’s top 10, Keith also predicts that ‘crying with laughter’ will top the list for a second year in a row in 2024.

Do you ROFL?

‘With its track record, I believe “crying with laughter” will remain at number one next year,’ he said.

‘Other laughter emojis will continue to be the most popular across the world.’

How do you use this one, is it good or bad?

Keith says the year-on-year growth shows emojis are here to stay and a ‘powerful communication tool’ used across the world.

He added: ‘I absolutely don’t think emojis will be dying out – emojis’ global popularity has continued to grow year-on year, and 2023 has been no different.

‘They’re an incredibly powerful communication tool that people use to better express themselves.’
