An energy expert has shared the one perfect and most cost-effective temperature setting for your home heating in winter and provided advice on how to save money.
When it comes to heating your house in winter, you need to find a balance between comfort and energy efficiency.
Depending on your activities and time of day, you can adjust the thermostat up and down within this temperature range to stay cosy, yet keep your energy bills low.
Llewellyn Kinch, CEO and co-founder of solar platform and home energy specialists MakeMyHouseGreen said: “Instead of turning your heating off at night or when you’re away, setting it to run within an optimal temperature range can make your home feel snug without overspending on energy.”
Llewellyn recommends the ideal all-round heat for your house in winter to be around 20C.
He said: “Set your heating to 20C when you’re in and active. This temperature strikes a good balance between comfort and winter energy efficiency,” says Llewellyn. “If 20C feels chilly, wear warm clothing or use a blanket rather than cranking up the heat”.
When you are out of the house or asleep, you should tweak the temperature to a lower setting which he said could help you save up to 10% on heating bills annually.
Llewellyn added: “If it’s cold outside and you switch your home heating off entirely when you’re asleep or out, the house can get very cold, and requires a lot of expensive energy to heat back up. So just tweak it down when you don’t need it to stay cosy – and save.”
If you’re looking for other ways to optimise the warmth of your home in winter, you can use a smart thermostat which will allow you to change the temperature of your home when you’re out.
You should also make sure you have insulation in your home which will help you to minimise heat loss.
Another important tip is to get your boiler professionally serviced every year which will help to make sure it won’t break when you need it most.
